Warrior Wednesdays: Be Thankful :)

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching and is one of my favorite times of year!  I enjoy the day off from work, cooking with my grandmother the night before Thanksgiving usually until about 2am (which is when I usually fall asleep and she continues cooking) and spending time with my family not to mention the food!  My whole family gets together and we have a great time together. We have adopted a tradition of giving thanks. After everyone is full from dinner we gather around the dining room table usually with dessert and one by one we say what we are thankful for.  It has become a tradition that I enjoy. God has done so much for my family and I that we have much to be thankful for.  Although, we express our thanks on this holiday expressing thanks to God should be done on a daily basis.

Every morning on my commute to work I give God thanks. Thanking God completely brightens up my day and usually helps me to have a great attitude. When you look around outside how can you not give God thanks? The beauty that he has provided with the sun that keeps us warm and sustains earth to the vast depths of the ocean God’s work is GREAT. I understand that sometimes life is hard and it may seem difficult to see the positives, but you always have something to be thankful for. If nothing else thank God for the air you just breathed or for the ability to see. Remember to ALWAYS  give God thanks!

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

TRANSFORMING TUESDAY: Contributing To The Foundation Set Before Us

Life with God has been all that I've known. I remember attending bible study this week and realizing how blessed I am to know truth. Not only do I know truth, but I've always known truth. I applaud my mother, aunts, and uncles for their hard work in ensuring that I remain in truth. It is because of their struggles that I am able to understand that my relationship with Christ is not something that they can do for me, but something that I have to seek out for myself. Not only that, but if God isn't at the center of my life, then I'm not really living. 

Today's reading in 1 Peter 2 talks about the living stone. What exactly is that? Stones can either be helpful or they can be annoying. For those of you who understand the importance/meaning of stones, then you'll know that stones are helpful. They aid in building things, they set foundations, they sharpen things, etc. For those of you who fail to understand the importance/meaning of stones, you'll find them annoying. They can slow things down if you fill your driveway with them, they can cause you to stumble, they can harm you, etc. There was a time when I found stones annoying in my life but that was because I wasn't appreciative of the foundations that were built for me. I wasn't appreciative of the work or the struggles that others contributed all for my benefit. 

The Bible says that WE are living stones being built into a spiritual house. This means that we are the foundation...we are responsible...we are the struggles...but we are also triumphant. My father always told me, "Parents stumble so that their children can walk upright." He was and still is so right. When I think back to the struggles that my parents endured, I know that because of them I won't have those struggles. Even outside of parents, we as an older generation have an obligation to set the foundation for our youth. In the church you can just look around and see the foundations being built. I can witness friends that I've grown up with take on positions in the church that mirror their parents. I can see people transform themselves into being more like Christ. In essence, I see the people around me who just like their parents, are craving pure spiritual milk.

We have to remember that Jesus set the ultimate foundation when he died for ALL OF OUR SINS on the cross. My prayer is that WE continue to set the foundation for those to come. Our work is never done. We are going to stumble, but God will never let us fall. I think this generation has to get to a place where they agree and openly express that living for God is cool and it is the BEST thing to do. We live in a society where it is okay to express anything else (just got the new Jordans, crossed over into a new fraternity/sorority, got a new job, or even got into school) but when it comes to God we are silent. Why is that? We see evidence of him every second of everyday and most of us are yearning to know him. We owe it to our parents who have struggled so that we may have the lives that we currently live, and most of all we owe it to God who has started this foundation of salvation to do our part and contribute. Tell someone about the goodness of Jesus in your life! That might be the only "Jesus" that person may encounter all day. And when it is your turn with your children, continue to set that foundation for salvation---your children deserve to know and live TRUTH. God is GREAT!

Merciful Monday: Follow the Yellow Brick Road!

But now this is what the Lord says:
“Do not weep any longer,
    for I will reward you,” says the Lord.
“Your children will come back to you
    from the distant land of the enemy.
17 There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.   

 “Your children will come again to their own land.
18 I have heard Israel saying, ‘You disciplined me severely,
    like a calf that needs training for the yoke.
Turn me again to you and restore me,
    for you alone are the Lord my God.
19 I turned away from God, but then I was sorry.
I kicked myself for my stupidity!
    I was thoroughly ashamed of all I did in my younger days.’

20 “Is not Israel still my son, my darling child?” says the Lord.
“I often have to punish him,
    but I still love him.
That’s why I long for him
    and surely will have mercy on him.
21 Set up road signs; put up guideposts.
Mark well the path
    by which you came.

Remember the movie The Wizard of Oz? The whole story is centered around the main character, Dorothy, following the Yellow Brick Road, a path that will lead her to an all-wise wizard, to safety, to home. The only problem is that along the way, she repeatedly gets sidetracked—by the Wicked Witch, a forest of angry trees, and other evils. At times she seems to have lost her way, unsure of who and where exactly she is, until she remembers her simple directions: to follow the yellow brick road.

 

Don't Get sidetracked. Follow the Yellow Brick Road!

A lot of times, we also get sidetracked from our purpose. We get sidetracked by guilt and shame that begin to weigh us down. We get sidetracked licking our wounds. We get sidetracked by holding on to people that God wants us to place in his hands.  Have you ever been so sidetracked that you felt like you were just wandering through life unsure of where you are headed and unsure of how to reach God even if you wanted to? If so, I've got good news for you! The Lord says: Do not weep any longer because there is hope for the future.

I’ve been sidetracked by all of these things. When I think back on some of the wrong things that I have done in the past I laugh about them because the craziness of the actions can be funny. When I think of other things, I genuinely wish I had not done them, and I get upset at myself all over again! Like Jeremiah, I am ashamed and I kick myself for my stupidity because I allowed myself to be taken off course. In essence I personally created these negative results. 

 Sometimes we make stupid decisions throughout our journey that take us off our path and take our eyes off of the prize (Jesus!) and as a result, bad things happen to us so we lick our wounds, relishing in our depression and wallowing in the negative. But when bad things happen to us, it doesn’t mean that God doesn’t love us or dislikes us more than other people that we think have “good” lives. It means that, he has to punish us sometimes for our own good, and even when he does, he does so in love and in mercy because we are his “darling” children. He sends love and mercy remind us to remind us to “follow the yellow brick road” as he refocuses our lenses on Him. 

  

Other times, I’ve been saddened by the decisions of others, by friends and family members that have walked away, that made life decisions that God does not agree with and simultaneously led me toward ungodly acts. Luckily, there is hope of return “from the distant land of the enemy” for us and for our friends and family. God says that he has “set up road signs; put up guideposts” and marked our paths so that we can return to Him. Luckily, God ALWAYS forgives and allows us to continue on our paths, we just have to remember to do the same! 

When you feel lost and as if you have strayed from the right path, God will lead you back. He can restore a wayward soul and a wayward mind. Don’t be confused and don’t weep any longer. Forgive yourself and others, let go, release yourself from past hurts, and refocus on the task at hand. Declare that you are obstinate and focused on God! He will make all things new if you follow Him!

Salvation Sunday: You're My People

This reading really got me today. Really love the verses in Jeremiah. Jeremiah 29:11 speaks that God knows the thoughts He has for us. He knows the plans for our lives. He knows what is supposed to happen in our lives. He says that He knows the plans. The plans that He has for our lives is a prosperous plan. The will of God is that all would not perish. God wants us to be successful. He doesn't want us to be in a lifestyle that will cause harm to our lives. The issue is do we trust God to guide us? Do we trust God to lead us through our lives? God knows the beginning and the end. The thing is that God gives us the power of choice. Therefore, if things are not working out the way we thought or not prosperous, then that means it might be us not trusting God!! 



In Jeremiah 30, it says "You will be My people, and I will be your god!!" The way for God to allow us to be successful is for us to trust Him. It's for us to put our trust and faith in God. How do we do this? We do this by seeking God. Israel Houghton sang a song that says "I will search for you and I will find you. I will find you with all my heart." Love that song!!! If you're looking for an answer from God, seek Him. Jeremiah 29:13 says "And ye shall seek me, and find me , when ye shall search for me with all your heart." 

You want something specific? Couple of things to do: 

1) "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33

2) "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." Matthew 7:7-8 

So if you want something, ask God. Seek God for the answers that you are looking for and watch Him take care of you. Remember God said, " And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God." (Jeremiah 30:22). Therefore, if He is our God and we are His people, then we can trust and know that God will take care of us and protect us if we let Him. Let God take care of you. Let Him cover you in all areas of your life. Since we are His people, we know He will protect us. Remember "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31). Trust God and watch Him see you through.

Saturday Sacrifice: DON'T BE A SCROOGE!!

Our lives are nothing but a faint breeze that is here one minute and is gone the next.

I always tell myself to live purposefully every day.

What I mean is living my life God conscious; living a life that spreads God’s love, and grace to those who don’t know him yet.

It could be simply talking to an individual about Jesus, or just showing God’s love.

Why do I try to do this every day?

Tomorrow is not promised to any one of us.

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”~James 4 NIV

 I don’t want to leave this world, and not have affected anyone for Christ. To me it would be a waste of my life; honestly, if that happened I would have lived a selfish life almost like Mr. Scrooge.

You guys know the story lol. Mr. Scrooge was the meanest and stingiest man in town. No one loved or even liked him. Even though he had everything in the world, his life was empty. He had no purpose for living until he found one. His purpose was to give in all of his abundance to those who were without like Tiny Tim, the crippled boy. Like Mr. Scrooge, we have an abundance of blessings. I’m not speaking only of financial abundance, but we have an abundance of joy, love, peace, grace, and hope because of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We need to stop being stingy and share our abundance with others so that they will have the same. We need to live our life purposefully; we need to be God conscious.

When you live your life God conscious I believe that he will use your gifts and talents for his glory and take you places you never been before so you can affect the lost and hurting people you come into contact with.

Like right now as I’m writing this blog I’m thinking of other ways I can use my talents outside the church walls to reach people who don’t have hope.

Yes, I can witness to people by holding conversations about Jesus. But, I want to use more than my mouth as an instrument for God’s glory.

I want to use my entire being.

God has given me, you, all of us different abilities to use for him. He has given us abilities, skills, and talents that can affect this crippled world.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Come near to God and he will come near to you…Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”~James 4 NIV

God Responds and Did Respond to our Faith

James 2:22, 24
²² Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

²⁴ Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

In the past these verses confused me, but I understand now. Perfect faith causes action and a different mentality. As the bible says you need both faith and works, because how can one say they believe yet ones actions don’t match. Almost, like a couple that becomes pregnant, and continues to live as if they’re not pregnant. I’m only assuming because I have no idea, but I assume you’d prepare for the child.

A great example of faith would be my younger sister whom I call “Law Dog” (from movie Tomb Stone). When she was hired to her job, she began professing her faith in God telling people it was only a temporary job. A month would pass and my sister would repeat the same thing, this is temporary. Close to a year passed by and my sister found herself interviewing for a job that fit her desired criteria. As she was waiting for the response she still expressed her faith, now considered a joke to some co-workers, but she’d say “I’m here temporarily”. My sister called me the day she interviewed and excitedly told me how well it went. Somewhere in that conversation I got confused, because I said in response to her exuberance “Let’s celebrate”. Then she said to me “O I didn’t get it yet”. I laughed as her faith was inspirational. Then I gathered some friends sharing with them her faith via texts inviting them to pre-celebrate with us for the job she’ll receive.  She received that job days later.

¹³ We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

Thirsty Thursdays: Faith WORKS

“…According to your faith be it unto you” Matthew 9:29. This verse came to mind after today's reading. Faith is belief in something that is not proven or is yet to take place. But as stated in James 2:14-26 it takes more than just a belief. An attitude of expectancy is required and there needs to be action put towards those beliefs.

“14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, Go in peace; keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:14-17. It is one thing to believe in something, but true faith backs up that belief with action. Do not just hope, it is more than a want. Put forth works in support of what you believe and hope for. One example that comes to mind is from fellow blogger Hannah Spriggs. She applied for a job and had faith that God would bless her with the position. Before finding out whether or not she got the job she went out to eat along with a few others as a celebratory/congratulations dinner. Along with her faith she had an attitude of expectancy, she knew God would bless her and she went out to celebrate and give thanks before the blessing even came to fruition. Her walk with Christ led her to be confident in what he would do in her life. Few days later she heard back from the job and she received a position. “According to your faith be it unto you”.

“21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did…24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone” James 2:21-24. Scripture in Romans tells us that “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.” The more we put God in our lives through things such as reading and studying his word the more our faith will grow and the more we will see him working in our lives. As we want God to move in our lives we should approach each day with faith and hope. Our actions should coincide with our beliefs. Don’t claim to have faith God will deliver you from a situation yet mope around stressing wondering how you will get through it. Give thanks even before it is settled, praise him in advance for what he is going to do. In the song "I Understand" by Smokie Norful he writes a part from the point of view of God saying "I am the Lord, i changeth not, i wont forget nor have i forgot, you see everything works according to my plan, I am God, trust me i have the whole world in my hand". Trust God, lay claim to the promises God has made you. He can and will stay true to his word. He will not abandon you in the midst of your struggles. He will never leave you nor forsake you. He has come to not only give us life but give us life more abundantly.  Remember, all things are possible to those who believe. “Believe in His goodness today and take a step of faith toward the life of blessings God has prepared for you”

Warrior Wednesdays: Count It All Joy

Going through my walk with God has been an interesting experience. Lately, I have been going through trials and not understanding why certain situations were happening. I searched various scriptures to help encourage me. Although, I felt encouraged when reading them I was also perplexed. Enduring these trials I now understand the meaning behind these scriptures.

“My bretheren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire wanting nothing.” James 1:2-4

When reading these verses, I could not understand why anyone would be joyful when falling into “divers temptations” or when going through a rough situation. However, I now realize that going through struggles has led me closer to God. I have learned to trust him and to hide in the shelter of the ALMIGHTY! He has given me peace in the storm. I have learned that the struggle is a part of the process and the end of the process makes me a wiser person.

I have begun to rejoice in struggles because I know my help is coming. I believe God has something great in store for me.  I would not trade the experience because it has matured me as a Christian and has led me closer to God.

My example of trusting God:

In January 2013, I was working for a company and was offered a job by one of my clients. The opportunity was tremendous. The company was going to create a position for me, I would be able to work from home and go into the office when I wanted. The transition would have been easy as I already knew the business and knew everyone in the company. My client did not want to steal me away from my job and when it became clear that my General Manager would not let me go my client backed off and I was no longer offered the position.  At first I could not understand why this wonderful opportunity had fallen through although, it did not work out I continued to trust in God. In April my client’s company who offered me a job sold themselves with the idea that they would be managing another company. The company they thought they would manage became in charge over them and began to manage them. By July only 3 people remained with the company the rest had been laid off or found another job. By not giving me that job God was protecting me. Had I taken the position in January I would have been forced to find a new job or fired 7 months later. God being all knowing kept me from that although I had no idea what was to come. This past year has been a tremendous journey. I have been hit by many trials, but I know God will bring me through. If you are going through any trial trust God! When situations do not work how you think they should there is always a reason. God has a plan!

TRANSFORMING TUESDAY: Blessed Are They That...

A BLESSING is defined as:

• The act of invoking divine protection or aid
• A short prayer of thanksgiving before or after a meal; grace
• Approval; good wishes
• The bestowal of a divine gift or favor
• A happy event or state of affairs

There are so many people, places, and things in life that confirm that we are truly blessed. We can look at the sun and moon to know that we are blessed. If you can see both of them, then that is a sign that you can see. Can you imagine life without sight? I can't but there are people who live without sight everyday. I can turn on the news and understand that I am truly blessed. The news in itself is extremely depressing. I don't know when the last time I was able to turn on the news and see something positive. Just last night, I saw a news report of a young male who shot 2 people over a jacket that he wanted. Some people may look at that as pure stupidity, but the reality is that people have seriously lost their conscience. They have zero emotional connections with other people because there have been disconnect in the homes and in society at large. The point is, you have to understand that you are truly blessed because you are not a victim.

The Bible says in Psalms 128, that those who fear the Lord are blessed. This is true!!! My mom always used to tell me that the only person I should fear was God ( I feared her too when I got in trouble lol). I fear God because this same life that he gave me can and will be taken away. I fear God because he provides for me. I fear God because he is the author and finisher of my life. I fear God because he protects me. I fear God because I do not lean on my own understanding. I fear God because without him I am nothing and with him I am everything. Because I fear him, I am blessed.

Last Wednesday, my father unfortunately passed away. That day and his burial have been the hardest days of my life. Just getting through everyday was and has been a struggle. I've been praying for answers and before his death I had been praying for healing. God didn't give me that. Initially I was upset because I thought that God loved me enough to answer my prayers and everyone who prayed for my father. However, as the days have passed God has given me the clarity and guidance that I have needed to reveal certain things to me. Yes my father (who was my friend, my counselor, my heart, my provider, my protector, who was truly a gift from God) has passed but in the midst of the heartache I am still blessed. I don't fear God any less, and I don't doubt him. I am blessed because I am still living, I still have a mother, my family has grown closer, and prior to my father's death I was able to tell him everything that I wanted to tell him. I was able to express my love, I was able to tell him how important he was to me, and I was able to tell him all of things that I would accomplish because of him. And in return, I was able to know how much my father loved/still loves me.

I am blessed because death is unexpected and so many times people don't have those moments to express to their loved ones what they want them to know. You can't get time back, but God blessed me with that time to do just that. This isn't to say that I am not going to miss my daddy, but it is to say that even in the midst of this chaos I am blessed beyond words. And more importantly, his life/presence was and still is a blessing. Thank you God for blessing me! So whenever you can't find something to be thankful for, look around and recognize how blessed you truly are in comparison to others. Your parents may drive you crazy but at least you still have them. Siblings are annoying but you still have them. Bills keep piling up but you have the income and means to pay them. School is draining but at least you have been afforded the opportunity. Blessings come but they also go. As long as you fear God, whenever those blessings go there will be more to follow.

Prayer:

Lord we ask today that you remind us of how blessed we are. We also ask that you keep those blessings flowing because we do fear you. We ask that when we feel the weight of the world is too much we ask that you carry those burdens for us. And lastly we want to thank you for those blessings both seen and unseen. You are amazing beyond words and we love you.

Merciful Monday: Be Gentle

Just yesterday I was talking to some friends about someone that has really been trying me lately. This person has been getting under my skin to the point where I anticipate being angry after every encounter with them. The worst part about it is that that this person is a leader to whom I have to submit often. When discussing this issue yesterday I said that I was hoping that this person would say something crazy to me so that I would have a justified reason for going off on them. I was basically hoping to be provoked so that I could act rashly and not feel bad about it after.

As Titus 3 says, as believers we should always be obedient and ready to do good. We should avoid quarreling and slander, but instead be gentle and full of humility. In my situation, I was not ready to do good…actually I was ready for quite the contrary. I was ready to quarrel and I was ready to hit below the belt (in a way that some may consider slanderous lol).

This is why the Bible is so important to me. It constantly reminds me of how to conduct myself as a Christian should; and these reminders come in simple forms that don’t feel like a list of Do’s and Don’ts. In a way this reminds me of talks with my grandmother. She always says “Advice is cheap. You can either take it or leave it” then she proceeds to say what she has to say and leave it alone. Similarly, one purpose of the Bible is to advise and convict us. Ultimately we choose whether to consult the source (the Bible) and whether to follow the advice given, fully knowing that we should follow God’s advice above all else.

While I can’t say that it will be easy to treat this person with humility and gentleness (when in my opinion they are quite proud and a lot of their actions are blatantly disrespectful), I am willing to try and I know that I can always pray if I need help. Furthermore, it’s not all about my feelings, because I don’t know what that person is going through to cause them to act the way they do.  

This was particularly on time for me. Now not only do I know how I should react when I face this person again, but how to help someone else should they encounter a similar situation. I’m sure you can think of an instance when this happened to you or maybe to a friend. Be a friend that gives godly advice and tell them what Titus 3:1-2 says, or send them the link to this page! Knowledge of the word is power, people!

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place” (2 Corinthians 2:14).

Salvation Sundays: Hold on!

I want to encourage everyone that no matter what you are going through to hold onto your faith and trust God!!! I know that these are rough times and you may be wondering God how am I going to get through this. It's in these times that you have to hold onto the faith. All those times that you are crying and mourning and stressing about life, don't worry because your weeping will turn into laughter. God has your back and knows what is in your future. Yes, there are some things that happen in your life that are not good at all. There are some things that you may be stressing about or wondering God why did this happen to me. Just hold on to your faith with God. Psalm 126: 5-6 says "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him." Just know that the weeping times and the hardships don't last always. Know that trouble doesn't last always!! 

God is an awesome God. He is the one that will change the situation that you are in. When you are trusting God, there is nothing that you have to worry about. When you are trusting God, just know that He will always take care and protect you. Just know that God will turn whatever was meant to harm you for your better. God turned the evil attacks to make it for your good. God will turn it!!!

So no matter what you are going through and no matter what is happening, just keep your faith and just hold on. Hold on for a little bit because it will get better!!! Keep your head up and stay strong. God will see you through it!!!

Saturday Sacrifice: Dissappointments are not what you thing they are=)

Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers?
No, it is you, Lord our God.
    Therefore our hope is in you,
    for you are the one who does all this.

“Our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this”.

So, this week I had an interview.

The funny thing about this interview is I got this interview from a closed door.

What do you mean Hannah???

I know it sounds funny, let me explain.

So, before this interview I had another interview at the same place, same time =). However, it was a different position.

I was so hyped for this position!!!!^_^ Like super hyped!!!^_^

Not only was the position paying the money I wanted and some. But, it was also in NYC =)(for ppl who grew up in the suburbs you know what I mean) and the position was in a great facility!

So, the interview went well. Honestly better than I expected. I said all the right things and asked all the right questions.

It seemed like the loved me, and would consider me a valuable asset to have on their team.

On my way home from the interview I was sitting on top of the world. Nothing could bring me down.

Untill, a couple of days later when I received a call back from my potential employers.

You could imagine how happy I was when I saw their number on my phone.

I had thoughts going through my mind like this:

I GOT IT! I GOT IT! THANK YOU JESUS!

Wait…would they call me to say I didn’t get the job….NOOOOOO that would be cruel lol I got this!^_^

So, when I picked up the phone my mood suddenly changed from happy-go-lucky to down-n-out.

I didn’t get it.

It took everything in me to talk to that man without an emotional voice.

I was sooooo mad.

I was soooo sad.

I was soooo disappointed.

Then all of sudden questions like why God? Began to come into my mind.

And just as soon as those questions began to flood my mind, the man says:

I’m going to send you resume to another department in the same hospital for another position.

Now this position is everything I wanted my first job to be. When I mean everything, I mean everything.

But of course I was trying to pay attention but my mind was so focused on them denying me the first position that I wasn’t really listening.

Long story short, the first interview opened the door to my second interview =).
