Thirsty Thursdays: Repentance

“…Your sins have been your downfall! 2 Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously that we may offer the fruit of our lips” Hosea 14:1-2. We were all born into sin. On a daily basis we make choices consciously or subconsciously to do right or do wrong, fight the good fight, the battle between good and evil so to speak. Imperfect in nature we sometimes end up doing wrong and falling short. Luckily for us we serve a loving and forgiving God.

In life there will be times in which we stumble during our spiritual walk. It doesn’t help that the devil is out trying to steal, kill, and destroy. He will attempt to deceive you, distract you, and derail you. He knows sin disconnects us from God and will do whatever necessary to break that relationship. But do not be discouraged or demoralized. For all our shortcomings and iniquities repent, ask God for forgiveness. One saying that always stuck with me was “Failure is not falling down, its refusing to get back up, so if you fall down 7 times get up 8”.

We are not going to be perfect. In the Old Testament sin was atoned for through different sacrifices. After Jesus died on the cross for you and I, his blood paid the price for sin. So now in the instances in which we slip up no first-born lambs have to be sacrificed but we ought ask God for forgiveness. As we feel sorry for the wrong we’ve done, confess our sins and ask for forgiveness we should also truly work on changing our actions and mindset in order to not commit the same sin. Repenting is more than just saying sorry, its truly being sorry and not wanting to make the same mistake. To help guard us from this we need to be “of sober mind”. In addition, studying the word of God creating a strong foundation will help us not only recognize potential deception and distractions from the devil but also provide the strength and confidence to turn away and not give in.  “9…the ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.” Hosea 14:9
